Poulenc's wind sonatas share similar thematic material. For example, motifs in the final movement of the Clarinet Sonata can be heard in the Scherzo of the Oboe Sonata. Similarly, the Second Movement of the Clarinet Sonata opens with a motif that can be seen as an inversion of the opening of the Elégie of the Oboe Sonata.

The Sonata for piano duet owes something to Stravinsky, but the Sonata for two clarinets is a wholly original conception, both in respect of the medium and the use Poulenc makes of it – in 1921 Bartók wrote to Poulenc to say that he had read both works with the keenest interest.

The sonata was commissioned by the American Library of Congress and is dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, an American patron of chamber music. The Sonate pour violon et piano (Violin Sonata), FP 119, by Francis Poulenc was composed in 1942–1943 in memory of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. The score, dedicated to Poulenc's niece Brigitte Manceaux, was published by Max Eschig.

He first sketched it in 1940. It was dedicated to the French cellist Pierre Fournier, who had helped with the technical aspects of the cello part, as the composer was unfamiliar with the instrument. Poulenc wrote one each for clarinet, flute and oboe (sorry bassoonists….we know he was planning one for you, but he died before getting around to it). Not that the Clarinet Sonata wasn’t a close call! Poulenc was planning on premiering the work, but he died before being able to do so. 2016-10-14 · The Poulenc Sonata includes a number of double tonguing passages that are marked with the same ominous slashes through already fast moving notes that we saw last week in the Hue Fantasie. The same techniques can be applied to practicing these passages including using coo’s, uka-tukas, and chirps.
